The Cryptocurrencycard.org C-Suite Series interviews leaders in the crypto space driving real-world adoption. In this interview, we speak with Daniel Gouldman, the CEO & Founder of Ternio. Ternio provides white-label technology to enterprise customers giving blockchain and cryptocurrency real-world applications. Ternio is also the company behind BlockCard, a crypto fintech platform powered by Ternio. Convert cryptocurrency into real-world utility and have more control over your money than ever before.
- Tell us about your background. What got you interested in cryptocurrency?
For 20 plus years – I worked for corporations finishing my career as a VP at a Fortune 500 company. I started a few digital companies that allowed me to do very well. My co-founder – Ian – and I settled on the use of blockchain to solve for some real-world problems and that focus on blockchain led us to cryptocurrency naturally.
- Do you have any hobbies? What do you do outside of work?
My biggest hobby is work; I really enjoy it. It consumes my life. I really identify with the philosophy that Jeff Bezos espouses relative to work/life harmony. It’s not about balance, because that implies a trade-off. My life is very harmonious and more meaningful when I work. When I need to just relax – I work out, watch movies, play video games and spend time with family.
- When did you decide to start a company in the crypto space?
We decided to build something in the 4th quarter of 2017; we officially started the company on January 1st, 2018. So we’ve been around for a minute and I think our story has just begun.
- Did you learn anything valuable in the first 60-90 days of running your company?
The first 60 to 90 days was an exciting time. We were willing to test the waters to see if we could get some traction. We started from zero and had to learn a lot. When you’re faced with insurmountable odds – it helps when you are doing it as a team. I think the first 60 to 90 days – that was when I realized how many dishonest people there were in the crypto industry.
- How do you deal with competition? What sets your company apart from others?
Well, rule #1 – we don’t say bad things about our competitors. When it comes to competition – I think there’s the obvious direct competition, but the REAL competition for all of us … not just Ternio … It is really just a blockchain fintech company taking on the status quo. Some of the companies we compete against who do what we do are doing a great job, but none of us compare to a JP Morgan Chase or a Western Union or a Paypal right now obviously. For us to really make our mark – it’s going to take asymmetrical warfare. We need to play to our strengths and that’s agility and innovation. What sets us apart from our competitors no matter who you look at (I think) is that we’re very innovative and entrepreneurial. For us to win – we’re going to have to out-innovate and outwork other folks. But that’s my hobby anyway.
- What do you look for when hiring people at your company?
Nobody wants to work with an asshole. Culture trumps everything else. When we’re hiring someone – we want it to be someone who’s a subject matter expert or at least they have the mindset that they want to be. Someone entrepreneurial and self-starting. Someone who’s not going to make excuses. Someone who’s going to put in the work. Someone who wants to do build great shit. Everyone on our team has had to sacrifice something at some point and to join Ternio you have to be willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
- What is the one thing you wish your customers knew when signing up for your card?
#1 thing I want them to know is that there is a LOT more coming. We’re adding features like crazy and we want them to have a great experience.
8. What does 2020 have in store?
We just rolled out 6.38% crypto back rewards so that’s a huge deal. We’re rolling out a mobile app for iOS and Android, decentralized wallets, checking accounts – domestic and international, the ability to buy/sell cryptocurrency, a debit card program in Europe, and a “Global card” as well. There is a lot more we want to do between now and the end of 2020.
9. Who has the best Rewards program in the business?
The BlockCard of course. We’re very excited about being able to offer up to 6.38% crypto back rewards on all purchases. It’s a great offer and we’re very proud to offer it to our customers.
